Carbon blocks have been used in the water filtration industry since the 1970’s. They were found to be the most effective both as a standalone treatment method and within filtration systems with multiple stages. There are many factors to consider when it comes to designing and manufacturing a proficient carbon block water filter.
Activated carbon is quintessential in eliminating bad odors, poor taste and contaminants such as chlorine in drinking water. The activated carbon is processed in a way that the porosity of the granules is increased, thus allowing a large surface area for adsorption. With a large surface area it provides an atmosphere very conducive for adsorption, couple with the fact that carbon’s low cost and abundance it is an excellent media to be used in many water filtration applications. Activated carbon is less effective in the removal of heavy metals, nitrites, dissolved inorganic contaminants or sediment, thus it is most productive when a sediment filter precedes the carbon filter.
Carbon blocks are mainly made up of activated carbon granules and a binding agent allowing the carbon to maintain a static position relative to each other, thus making the carbon block a much better choice. Carbon is commonly used is POU water filtration in both GAC and carbon block applications. There are two basic forms; Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) and Carbon Block. The uniformity of the solid carbon block does not channel or bypass due to its density, thus there is no room for bacteria to be stagnate within the filter. GAC is ground into particles that are smaller than 0.84mm, whereas the particles for the carbon are ground into even smaller particles anywhere from 7 to 19 times smaller than the GAC. It is this uniform pore structure between the individual granules of carbon that enable carbon block to achieve higher effectiveness in contaminant reduction.
